Azure outage means Microsoft’s Outer Worlds 2 is available on Steam, PS5… but not Xbox

Whelp.

The newly-released The Outer Worlds 2 isn’t available for purchase or installation on Xbox because of a Microsoft Azure outage, but remains available on Steam and PS5, Obsidian has confirmed.

“Due to an ongoing Azure service outage, The Outer Worlds 2 may be temporarily unavailable to purchase or install on Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox app on PC, and with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass,” Obsidian said on BlueSky a little over three hours ago. “We’re working with Microsoft to resolve the issue and will update players when we have more information.”

Obsidian also confirmed the Azure outage “affects Shared Worlds and Online mode in Grounded and Grounded 2.”

The Azure outage impacts more than Microsoft’s newest Xbox release of course — similar to the Amazon Web Services outage from last week, this one affects Office 365, alongside mobile apps and websites for businesses including Costco and Starbucks. The Scottish Parliament was even suspended due to technical issues with its voting system, which sources speaking to the BBC blame on the outage as well.

At around 6.30 am AEDT, Azure said a fix had been put into place, and that “full mitigation” should arrive “within the next four hours as we continue to recover nodes”.

The outage comes weeks after a controversial move by Microsoft to increase the subscription of price of each of Xbox Game Pass’ tiers.

The Outer Worlds 2 should be available on Windows PC via Steam and Battle.net, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PS5, also through Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere… when everything’s working as expected.
