Aussies spent nearly $4 billion AUD on games in 2021

With more than $1.5 billion AUD pumped into mobile games.

Australians spent nearly $4 billion AUD on video games in 2021, consumer sales data from Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA) has recently revealed.

Of that total amount, Aussies spent more than $1.5 billion AUD on mobile games alone, with more than half a billion dollars accounted for in hardware sales (which likely would have skyrocketed if we had more PS5 and Xbox Series X stock).

Close to another $1.5 billion AUD was spend digitally, with subscriptions like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus accounting for $162 million AUD in sales.

“It was no surprise for IGEA to see consumer game sales and platforms perform strongly during 2021,” said IGEA head Ron Curry.

“Playing games provided a continued source of connection and entertainment for Australians throughout another year of the pandemic, with our Digital Australia 22 report revealing that over 75% of us play games. All of the data confirms that games are one of the world’s most powerful entertainment mediums, and this looks set to continue.”

IGEA’s Digital Australia 2022 report has some rather interesting insights; a whopping 92% of Australians surveyed say they have at least one game platform within their home. Of that total amount, 35% have a lone game platform within their home, while 17% has three.

Two-thirds of those surveyed say they use guides and walkthroughs — and on that, have you checked out our Guides section — while one-third post their own gameplay videos. 80% of those surveyed say they’d like more diversity in games.
