Assassin’s Creed Odyssey DLC straightwashes your gay character

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey fans are furious that the game’s latest piece of DLC essentially removes the option to play as a homosexual character, straightwashing him or her regardless of your desire.

The DLC in question is Legacy of the First Blade Part 2, available as part of Odyssey‘s big January 2019 update.

AC Odyssey touted player choice as a main selling point including who to romance,” Redditor ErinKane wrote. “But with the new DLC even if you played Alexios as a gay man or Kassandra as a lesbian the game forces you to romance and end up having a kid with a partner of the opposite gender whether you want to or not. There is zero options to stop it.”

As Erin points out, Ubisoft Quebec highlighted the fact that players had control of their sexual orientation.

“If you want to be a woman and romance a woman, you can do that. If you want to be a man and romance a woman, you can do that. If you want to be a man and romance a man and a woman, you can do that,” Odyssey Narrative Director, Melissa MacCoubrey, told Stevivor back at E3.

Despite that proclamation, it seems the new DLC overrides your choices and delivers a straightwashed ending instead.

“I played through the new episode of the dlc without saving because I already had a bad feeling this was going to happen,” Redditor SatansPRGirl wrote. “I just reloaded my save before I completed it and won’t be playing the dlc anymore.

“I’m pretty disappointed with Ubisoft at the moment. I also chose every dialogue option to show that I wasn’t interested in a romance with the guy but that did absolutely nothing.”

Update: “We strive to give players choice whenever possible in Odyssey and apologise to those surprised by the events in this episode. Without spoiling it, you will engage in an important relationship as part of a set story. The motivation behind this relationship is yours to explore in game and will be reflected in your character’s story arc,” an Ubisoft representative told Stevivor when asked for comment, also suggesting the straightwashing will somehow be undone with future DLC.

“There is one episode left in Legacy of the First Blade which will tie your character’s actions together.”

Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
