Animal Crossing New Horizons may have microtransactions

Animal Crossing New Horizons may feature microtransactions, its North American ESRB rating has confirmed.

As spotted by GamesRadar, the game’s official Nintendo eShop page confirms that New Horizons has been rated “E for Everyone” and features “Comic Mischief – Users Interact, In-Game Purchases”.

At the moment, it’s unclear what the microtransactions are or how much they’ll cost, but it’s reasonably sad news all the same. Coupled with the confirmation that New Horizons will limit a Switch to a single island, no matter how many individually registered users are playing, and the game might start to look a little less enjoyable.

Update: As reader Luke points out, Pokemon Sword and Shield had the same item listed in its ESRB rating — hopefully, the advice only is in reference to Nintendo Switch Online and not actual in-game item purchases.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons heads to Nintendo Switch on 20 March.
