Android Xbox app will soon allow for direct purchases

Rejoice!

The Android Xbox app will soon offer players the chance to directly purchase Xbox games, Microsoft has revealed.

The functionality used to be present inside the Xbox app on both iOS and Android before Microsoft pulled it back in 2020. Speaking with Stevivor at the time, Microsoft said it was because of mobile ecosystems (aka, Google and Apple wanted a cut of Microsoft’s sales).

Now, new court rulings that are making both tech giants open up app store availability means we’re back in business.

“The court’s ruling to open up Google’s mobile store in the US will allow more choice and flexibility,” said Xbox president Sarah Bond.

“Our mission is to allow more players to play on more devices so we are thrilled to share that starting in November, players will be able to play and purchase Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android,” Bond continued.

Curiously, Microsoft has nerfed the Xbox app on Android in other ways, merging it with the Xbox Game Pass app and removing direct cloud streaming access. You win some, you lose some…
