3DS, Wii U online play services finish 8 April

Get in your online play before then.

Both 3DS and Wii U online play services will be shut down on 8 April, Nintendo has today advised.

“As of 8 April 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software,” Nintendo wrote. “This also includes online co-operative play, internet rankings, and data distribution.”

Nintendo also pointed out that this also applies to the New Nintendo 3DS. Moreover, the online service that will remain online (but “may also end at some point in the future”) is the Pokemon Bank.

The company took to an FAQs section to assert that offline functionality in 3DS and Wii U titles will remain accessible, and that store content will remain intact.

“For the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to download update data, and redownload purchased software and downloadable content from Nintendo eShop,” Nintendo advised.

Finally, StreetPass will remain operational on 3DS, but the online-powered SpotPass will not.

A specific time for the online service shut down has yet to be detailed by the company.
