Mario Kart World: How to boost at the start of a race

Learn how to get a rocket start every time in Mario Kart World.

Boosting at the start line — known as a rocket start — is a staple of the Mario Kart series, and with 24-players, it’s more crucial than ever before in Mario Kart World

The timing for a rocket start is similar, but a little different in each Mario Kart game.

To get a boost at the start of a race in Mario Kart World, hold down the ‘A‘ button (accelerate) as soon as the number ‘2‘ comes perfectly into view. Start holding it down just before it starts to disappear and you’ll nail the rocket start boost every time.

If you start holding ‘A’ as the number ‘2’ starts to disappear, you’ll still get a boost, it just won’t be as strong. If you’re spinning out or not boosting at all, you’re missing the timing — make sure you’re only holding down ‘A’ when the number ‘2’ appears.

Going back to Mario Kart 64 through Nintendo Switch Online, the timing is quite different. In Mario Kart 64, you need to start holding ‘A’ just after the number ‘2’ fully disappears, otherwise you’ll likely spin-out.
