Microsoft downplays its consoles with new “This is an Xbox” campaign

Save up for a PS5?

Microsoft has continued to downplay the importance of its Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X consoles — which are failing extremely far behind Sony’s current-gen PS5 when it comes to sales — in a new ad campaign called “This is an Xbox”.

The campaign says that basically everything is “an Xbox”, including Samsung TVs, Meta Quest headsets, Amazon Fire Sticks, smartphones, laptops, PCs, and handhelds like the ROG Ally. It also reminds players that they could buy an Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X and play games without streaming via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and its bundled cloud streaming.

“We also believe that gaming should be easy to access and available for everyone, so whether you have an Xbox console, play on PC, with Samsung Smart TVs, handhelds, mobile phones, Amazon Fire TV, or a Meta Quest headset with Game Pass Ultimate, you can play with Xbox,” Microsoft’s Craig McNary wrote in a new post. “In fact, you’re probably reading this on an Xbox-enabled device, that can be powered on with the help of Cloud Gaming or the Xbox App for PC.”

In a time where Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed that there are no “red lines in our portfolio” — meaning everything from Halo to Gears of War to Forza could appear on PlayStation or Switch — we figure the campaign might as well include its competitors’ consoles too. Sure, you have to wait until 2025 to play Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PS5, but even then, it’s technically an Xbox when that happens.

Having the ability to play Xbox games on multiple devices is all well and good, but with lacklustre sales (and despite newfound teases that an Xbox handheld is years away), maybe Microsoft should create some flashy ad campaign that means to convince Xbox players that they should stick with Xbox Series X and not jump ship over to PS5. I mean, I’ve practically done just that myself.

Regardless, Microsoft has also confirmed it has partnered with “Crocs, Porsche, and The Happy Egg Co. (UK)” so you can be sure of items that are not Xboxes. Phew!
