Microsoft Australia testing local Azure server farm with “private preview”

Ever since launch, part of the Xbox One’s appeal was that the console could offload some processing items to Microsoft’s Azure server network. The problem is, Australia doesn’t have any localised servers to do that with.

Until now. Sort of.

Microsoft Australia’s Managing Director, Pip Marlow, took to a blog post to say that local servers are currently being tested.

“Today, I can very proudly announce that the Australian Azure Geo is now in private preview and a number of customers and partners are using the service today,” Marlow said. “Now I still can’t give you the final date for general availability but I can share that it is just around the corner, a matter of months away.

While we’ve got an ad-hoc cluster of servers for Titanfall, this news means Australia will actually have a real, dedicated server farm — or farms! — that will mean less ping and easier matchmatching across various titles on the Xbox One.

Here’s hoping private testing is done before November and Halo: The Master Chief Collection, eh?

Thanks, Lifehacker.
