We got there!
Apart from NHL, I’ve reviewed Just Dance pretty much year on year since the inception of this site. Like NHL, though, I’ve largely praised the long-running dance franchise one year, only to turn my nose up at it the next. Largely, my criticism focused on a high cost of entry, coupled with the need to spend even more money to subscribe to Just Dance Unlimited, a service that gatekept most of franchises good songs.
What a difference three years, and four versions of Just Dance makes. While I’m technically reviewing Just Dance 2026 Edition, I’m properly assessing 2022’s Just Dance platform, one that houses 2023 Edition, 2024 Edition, 2025 Edition and 2026 Edition alongside the revamped Just Dance+ (all but Unlimited in name).
This new (well, at least to me) platform sports a reduced cost, and smartly bundles Just Dance+ in smarter, more ways than I’ve experienced in past.
At the time of writing, here’s what you could spend inside Just Dance, and what it would give you accordingly:
- Just Dance 2026 Edition Standard Edition ($69.95 AUD): The core pack of 2026 songs, and 1 month of Just Dance+
- Just Dance 2026 Edition Deluxe Edition ($84.95 AUD): The core pack of 2026 songs, 4 months of Just Dance+, and various cosmetics
- Just Dance 2026 Edition Ultimate Edition ($104.95 AUD): The core pack of 2026 songs, and 13 months of Just Dance+
You can also buy the 2025 Edition Standard Edition for the same price as this year’s iteration — $69.95 AUD — but that doesn’t really make sense, as last year’s songs are all included in the Just Dance+ sub that comes with every tier.
While 13 months of access to Just Dance+ is probably overkill, Standard and Deluxe Editions mean you’ll get access to more than 300 songs in Ubisoft’s catalogue, more than enough to dance to for up to four months. If you get tired with what’s on offer, you can pare back down to the core 2026 songs while you wait for 2027 Edition to come around with more that you’ll “own” alongside further access to that larger catalogue again.
Even if you don’t spend any money on Just Dance, you’ll get a free trial period that’ll let you play through a handful of songs using tokens before you’re left with the ability to continue replaying two songs. It’s a great little try before you buy deal that’ll let you know if Just Dance is right for you. And with this all, my larger, yearly criticisms have been quashed.
With all that aside, let me explain the basics of Just Dance. Playing alone or in a group of up to six, you’ll choose from a selection of owned songs, attempting to mirror the avatars you see dancing on screen. The better you do, the higher the rating you’ll receive, generally sitting within a 5-star rating system. Songs have different difficulty levels — the new Bluey one is, unsurprising, easy for your little ones to join in, but you can bump things all the way up to extreme.
In terms of control schemes, those on Switch can grab a Joy-Con and have that track your motions, but the rest of us on Xbox or PlayStation will instead be using the Just Dance Companion App on our smartphone of choice. I’ve said it before, so I’ll say it again: “those using a Joy-Con or the companion app can cheat the system by simply moving their right hand in time with the song, [but] there’s far more enjoyment in actually dancing of course.”
If you’re feeling talented — and have chosen a 2025 Edition, 2026 Edition, or other select songs in the larger subscription catalogue — you can use the companion app to make your smartphone a camera that actually tracks your movements, like Kinect or the PlayStation Camera of old, but without needing the extra peripheral. Tracking’s okay, but most of the songs I wanted to play today are older and inside Just Dance+, meaning they’re not supported as yet.
By this, I mean Toxic from Just Dance 2, now forever immortalised behind the paywall. Being able to pretend I’m a sassy flight attendant almost makes up for the fact that I’m still lamenting the loss of the Just Dance World Dance Floor and instead have to make due with a co-op Party Mode that doesn’t quite cut the mustard. A lack of new Trophies and Achievements — due to this being a GaaS-style platform, and not a new game each year — will also dissuade some.
While Just Dance gets most of this right, it needs to be said that all this goodness — “owned” songs or those behind said paywall, only work when Ubisoft’s servers are up and working. For several hours during my review time, I kept encountering a PANDA-0006-0005 error, which is something that those on the game’s subreddit are quite familiar with. Nevertheless, when things are working, they’re working well… and for once (or maybe for the last four years) aren’t a strain on your wallet.
Just Dance 2026 is now available on Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS5, and Switch.
