This year’s GX Australia will be the last “in its present form”

This year’s GX Australia will be the last “in its present form”, organisers today revealed.

With a little over a month to go until GX Australia 2017, organisers Joshua Meadows and Liam Esler took to a Kickstarter update to explain.

“A brief explanation of our decision comes down to the fact that GX Australia is an incredibly expensive event to run, and one that takes up a considerable amount of time, stress, and energy. We’re all unpaid volunteers and it’s become increasingly untenable to sustain both financially and emotionally.”

“Last year, Liam was able to accomplish nothing short of a miracle in finding indie companies, educational establishments, and other supporters to make up for some of our budget shortfall, but both of us had to pay out of pocket to ensure that last year’s event could still take place,” the pair continued. “This year we’ve encountered the same situation despite assurances that we could count on support, and neither of us are in a position to front costs the way we were before.”

The duo assured those with tickets that the situation would not impact next month’s event.

“We don’t want to panic anyone or give the impression that we’re cancelling the event — we’re still very much committed to ensuring it happens, and we’re committed to making it every bit as exciting as we hoped it would be.”

To cover the “financial shortfall”, a “separate, shorter Kickstarter” will soon be launched, it was today confirmed.

The pair “encourage those who were on the fence about coming by to consider picking up a ticket and celebrating with us in April.”

GX Australia labels itself as “the most inclusive convention for gamers and geeks of all types,” and runs over 29-30 April at Sydney’s Australian Technology Park.
