Unity CEO John Riccitiello to retire following controversial pricing model

Shock!

Unity CEO John Riccitiello will retire from the company just weeks after announcing a controversial pricing model.

In September, Unity announced it would require developers using its engine to pay an additional, monthly Unity Runtime Fee that would be calculated by new game installs from 1 January 2024.

Needless to say, that announcement didn’t go over well with developers using Unity. The backlash against the change was so great that Unity backflipped on it within the same month.

Today, Unity announced that Riccitiello “will retire as President, Chief Executive Officer, Chairman and a member of the Company’s Board of Directors, effective immediately.”

James M. Whitehurst has been appointed interim CEO in Riccitiello’s absence.

“It’s been a privilege to lead Unity for nearly a decade and serve our employees, customers, developers and partners, all of whom have been instrumental to the Company’s growth,” Riccitiello said. “I look forward to supporting Unity through this transition and following the Company’s future success.”
