Ubisoft subscription head wants us to be “comfortable” not owning games

It's like Netflix... for games!

Players should be “comfortable with not owning [their] game,” Ubisoft subscription head Phillipe Tremblay told GamesIndustry earlier this week.

Tremblay’s comments came as Ubisoft announced two tiers of its Ubisoft+ subscription service. The first, called Classics, will offer up a library of “50+ iconic games on PC”, and is priced at $9.95 AUD per month.

The second, called Premium, offers up twice as many games on PC, including “new releases Day 1 & early access when available” alongside access to “selected games” on Xbox. That tier is priced at a whopping $23.95 AUD per month.

Speaking with Games Industry, Tremblay said there’s a “tremendous opportunity for growth” within subscription models, provided customers have the right mindset.

“One of the things we saw is that gamers are used to, a little bit like DVD, having and owning their games. That’s the consumer shift that needs to happen,” Tremblay said.

“They got comfortable not owning their CD collection or DVD collection. That’s a transformation that’s been a bit slower to happen [in video games]. As gamers grow comfortable in that aspect… you don’t lose your progress.

“If you resume your game at another time, your progress file is still there. That’s not been deleted. You don’t lose what you’ve built in the game or your engagement with the game. So it’s about feeling comfortable with not owning your game.”

Tremblay later took to the Ubisoft Blog to say that Ubisoft+’s new tiers were a “great way to introduce our games to brand-new players” and “really speaks to the model as a means to expand their horizons”.
