Tumblr adult content ban coming later this month

Tumblr will ban adult content from its website from 17 December, it today announced.

Banned content will include photography, illustrations and videos of sexual acts, representations of full-frontal genitalia and female-presenting nipples.

That very much includes naughty drawings of your favourite video game characters and potentially images too —  already, users on Reddit are reporting that images depicting a shirtless man as cosplaying as Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’s Alexios have been flagged.

Exceptions to banned content include birth or after-birth moments, female-presenting nipples in breastfeeding and nudity in non-sexual situations including sculpture or art. Written erotica is also allowed on the platform.

The new content restrictions mean Tumblr’s Safe Mode search search filter will be discontinued from 17 December.

“We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community,” Tumblr CEO Jeff D’Onofrio wrote in a blog post.

D’Onofrio continued to say that Tumblr will focus on building “the most welcoming environment possible for our community” and those upset by the new content restrictions can find another website to use.

Since its launch in 2007, Tumblr has allowed adult content on its platform.
