Tomodachi Life Living the Dream finally lets you be queer

Same-sex relationships and the ability to play as a non-binary character will be available.

More than ten years after Nintendo and Tomodachi Life on 3DS termed same-sex relationships “a bug” within the game, the upcoming Tomodachi Life Living the Dream will not only allow for same-sex couplings, but non-binary and asexual characters.

Today’s earlier Living the Dream Direct detailed the functionality, in which a character creation screen not only allows for you to set the gender identity of your character, but the gender your character is attracted to. In the image above, a dating preferences screen allows a character to be attracted to male characters, female characters, non-binary characters, or any (or none) of those options.

Same-sex relationships were available for a brief period back in 2014 inside Tomodachi Life on the 3DS before Nintendo stomped them out, labelling them “a bug”. In the patch notes that followed, Nintendo described the functionality as, “human relations become strange” before suggesting the translation was better suited to read, “human relations become altered”.

Nonetheless, Nintendo did pledge to do better in the next instalment of the franchise, which just happens to be Living the Dream some twelve years later.

“We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players,” Nintendo said at the time.

Tomodachi Life Living the Dream heads to Nintendo Switch on 16 April 2026. Today’s full livestream can be viewed above.
