Tomb Raider sells 8.5 million copies, becomes top-selling title in the franchise

Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider reboot has sold over 8.5 million copies, cementing it as the top-selling game in the franchise’s history.

Sales include the 2013 original release alongside those of the 2014 current-gen re-release.

Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level,” Crystal Dynamics head Darrell Gallagher said in a statement. “The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players.”

Despite the numbers, publisher Square Enix said sales failed to hit projections in 2013.

A follow-up, Rise of the Tomb Raider, is heading to Xbox consoles this year as a timed release.
