It's all coming together.
Tomb Raider has been going strong since 1996, with myriad games and voice actors behind it. Current steward Crystal Dynamics has recently spoken to how it will unify the franchise’s different iterations into a single timeline, and who will be voicing the current version of protagonist Lara Croft.
A unified Tomb Raider timeline
Speaking with GamesRadar, Crystal Dynamics’ Will Kerslake detailed where both new Tomb Raider games — Legacy of Atlantis and Catalyst — fit into the larger timeline.
“From a timeline perspective, Tomb Raider Catalyst is set years after the events of Tomb Raider Underworld,” Kerslake said. “With the reboot trilogy serving as her origin story, so we’re seeing a more experienced Lara Croft.”
So that means that Crystal Dynamics latest ‘survivor’ trilogy — Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Raider — canonically come first in the overall timeline. The 1996 original Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider Anniversary, and the new Legacy of Atlantis come next — all roughly in the same position — followed by a host of sequels. Finally, Catalyst comes at the end of the timeline, behind Tomb Raider Underworld.
“Same character; two different time periods in her life,” Kerslake summarised as part of a Q&A following last week’s Game Awards.
Alix Wilton Regan takes over as Lara Croft
The two new Tomb Raider games will feature a new voice actor as Lara Croft: Alix Wilton Regan.
Regan, who replaces Camilla Luddington as Croft, is no stranger to video games. Previously, she’s voiced characters including Specialist Samantha Traynor in Mass Effect 3, the female Inquisitor in Dragon Age Inquisition, Aya in Assassin’s Creed Origins, and more.
“[Regan] was already a fan when we met her,” said Crystal Dynamics’ Scot Amos in The Game Awards Q&A. “And then being able to talk to her, and [gaining] a sense that she has that wit and that charm and charisma that is a natural essence and core for Lara, but she also has that confidence and that depth of emotionality that we need for telling these great stories.”
Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis comes first in 2026; Tomb Raider Catalystis expected in 2027.
