Tencent buys 84.3% stake in Clash of Clan’s Supercell for $8.6 million USD

The Wall Street Journal yesterday reported that China-based Tencent has purchased an 84.3% stake in the Finnish developer Supercell.

Supercell is the developer of Clash of Clans, a free-to-play mobile game that’s proving more popular than Candy Crush in its heyday.

Tencent has purchased the stake for a total of $8.6 billion USD,  far more than the $5.9 billion USD Activision Blizzard spent on Candy Crush‘s King Digital Entertainment.

Supercell, also the developer of Clash Royale, made $779.1 million USD last year.
