SXSW Sydney Games Festival coming in October

The return of IEM Sydney kicks off its announcements.

The SXSW Sydney Games Festival is starting to be detailed as part of the larger SXSW Sydney program taking place in October.

While SXSW Sydney is an eight-day event running between 14-22 October, its games festival portion will run for just five days, between 18 to 22 October.

SXSW Sydney’s first games-themed announcement focused on the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Esports tournament, which will take place at the Aware Super Theatre over 20-22 October. The event is hosted in connection with ESL.

Moreover, a festival showcase will feature more than 150 indie titles that will be playable as part of SXSW Sydney.

“The SXSW Sydney 2023 Games Festival will be the place to experience the current trends and exciting future of the Games industry in Australia and beyond,” organisers declared. “If you’re a game developer, SXSW Sydney will offer you unprecedented access to a massive audience of industry professionals, media, creatives, and new fans and consumers.”

Local developers can apply to be part of the showcase right here. The deadline for applications is 16 August 2023.

“The SXSW Sydney 2023 Games Festival has something to offer all interconnected layers of the games industry, from the people who make games to those that love playing them,” organisers continued. “Sitting alongside SXSW Sydney’s 2023 Music and Screen Festivals, the Games Festival will celebrate and support games as a major creative industry.

“The festival will explore future trends in game development, publishing, and hardware manufacturing with games demos, announcements, hands-on play, stage sessions, performances, screenings, networking events, investment sessions and workshops.”

The SXSW Sydney Games Festival will also include panels and presentations, a tabletop festival, an XR showcase and more.
