Take a look!
The Switch 2 was finally revealed by Nintendo tonight, and will be available sometime this year.
A two-minute video from Nintendo, below, gives us our first proper look at the console (and not a mock up created based off of leaks). The trailer also details news of an April 2025 Nintendo Direct, meaning we won’t get the console until after that date at least.
The handheld looks like the original Switch (or rather, its OLED version), and sports a black, blue, and orange colour scheme. As leaked, the new console’s Joy-Cons are magnetically attached — and new, the Joy-Cons appear to be able to act similar to a PC’s mouse.
While we knew the console would be backwards compatible with Switch games, the trailer states that, “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2”. A new Mario Kart title was also teased, but not detailed.
The console also sports a new “C” button on its right-hand Joy-Con, though Nintendo hasn’t detailed what that’s about as yet.
The trailer also confirms that a special Melbourne-based Nintendo Switch 2 Experience will provide players the chance for hands-on with the console. That event takes place between 10-11 May 2025 here in Australia; ticket registration for the event is required and will be available here from 11.00 am AEDT on 18 January 2025.
The latest confirmed date for those Experience events is June, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the actual release of the Switch 2 follows that. We’ll report back as more is known.
In the meantime, what do you think of the Switch 2?
