Surprise! Big Ant’s AFL 26 is coming in one month (and again, in mid-season)

And the utter lack of promotion isn't anything to be worried about.

Another mid-season AFL game by Aussie studio Big Ant will drop in just one month, much to the chagrin of disengaged Port, Melbourne, Carlton, and North fans. Say hello to AFL 26!

Available from 8 May 2025 on Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5 — according to JB Hi-Fi, though it’s likely the title will also be available via Steam just like AFL 23AFL 26 comes again at a midpoint in a real-time footy season.

Speaking as a Detroit Red Wings hockey fan, I get that part of the appeal of a video game version of your favourite sport. Surely, it’s to overcome the odds and get your team on top… but that’s a lot easier done before you juuuuuuuuust miss out on playoffs. See aforementioned footy clubs and expect apathy.

“Feel every hit, hear every roar, and live every moment with unmatched authenticity and intensity. From the first bounce to the final siren, the action is fast, fierce, and true to the game,” reads a description on the retailer’s website. “With lifelike gameplay, roaring crowds, expert commentary, and all the drama of real AFL, you’re not just watching the game — you’re in it. This is footy, redefined.”

AFL 26 will boast a Pro Team mode, where you “take on all-new challenges as you rise through the ranks,” according to the description. “Compete through the seasons to unlock exclusive rewards, upgrade your squad, and showcase your skills. Then, take on your rivals and prove why your Pro Team stands above the rest.”

Also included is a career mode, a coach mode, AFLW, and more.

We’ll get Ben on this as soon as he’s able. Hit up a past episode of the Friendly Fire Show to hear what he thought of AFL 23.

We’ll report more on AFL 26 as more is known.
