Subspace Rhapsody marks Star Trek’s first ever musical episode

Strange New Worlds continues to think outside the box.

Now, it’s well established at this point that I have a love-hate relationship with Star Trek Strange New Worlds. While it’s got a stellar cast and crew and amazingly compelling characters, it tends to avoid visiting actual strange, new worlds and certainly relies upon legacy characters when it’s supposed to be charting its own course.

That all said, I’m back on board with Strange New Worlds as a result of this weekend’s surprise Lower Decks crossover (I highly, HIGHLY recommend it) and I’m equally as excited for “Subspace Rhapsody,” the second season’s pentultimate episode and, more importantly, Star Trek’s first musical episode.

Announced over the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, the ninth episode of this current series will feature 10 original songs with music and lyrics by Kay Hanley (Letters to Cleo) and Tom Polce (Letters to CleoCrazy Ex-Girlfriend).

You can get a taste of what to expect below; if you like what you hear, you can also pre-save the episode’s soundtrack here on a number of services including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and YouTube Music.

“Subspace Rhapsody” will stream here in Australia on Paramount+ from 3 August; you can check up on the season’s full schedule right here.

Paramount+ will set Aussies back $8.99 AUD per month; you can sign up now and get your first week free.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds airs on Paramount+ in the USA and Australia.
