Street Fighter V: DLC characters can be earned rather than bought, Super and Ultra releases done away with

Capcom’s Peter “Combofiend” Rosas took to the PlayStation Blog to confirm that Street Fighter V‘s DLC characters can be earned rather than purchased with real-life cash. Moreover, future Super or Ultra re-releases will be done away with.

Street Fighter V will be the first iteration in the franchise where it is possible for dedicated players to earn all gameplay related content (such as characters) for free, simply by playing the game,” Rosas said.

He also pointedly stated that, “the initial release is the only disc you will ever need to own.”

“Long gone are the days of forced Super and Ultra upgrades,” he continued. “Enjoy free balance updates as soon as they become available, and find and choose the post-launch characters that you want to get.”

Rosas also confirmed that Street Fighter V‘s launch roster will consist of 16 fighters; four will be new to the series. To date, Capcom has only confirmed seven fighters: Ryu, Ken, Chun-li, Charlie Nash, M. Bison, Birdie and Cammy.

Rosas said the change had been made to keep player groups together, active and happy.

“Looking back on the Street Fighter IV series, we had always released bundles of content all at once, like with Super Street Fighter IV and Ultra Street Fighter IV,” Rosas reflected.

“While these one-time updates did revive interest in the series every few years, it was difficult to keep players engaged for long periods of time unless they were competitive.”

Street Fighter V will feature two types of currency: Fight Money can be earned and spend on new characters, and Zenny can be purchased with real-world money to do the game.

Street Fighter V will be available next year on Windows PC and PS4.
