Square Enix withdraws from Hitman developer Io Interactive

Last night, Square Enix announced it had withdrawn from Hitman‘s Io Interactive.

“To maximize player satisfaction as well as market potential going forward, we are focusing our resources and energies on key franchises and studios,” Square Enix began in a statement.

“As a result, the Company has regrettably decided to withdraw from the business of Io Interactive, a wholly‐owned subsidiary and a Danish corporation, as of March 31, 2017.”

Io Interactive is the developer of the Hitman franchise alongside Kane & Lynch. It has yet to release a statement itself.

The future of the Hitman series is also unclear. Io’s latest, episodic title has a cliffhanger ending, and three more seasons were in planning.
