Square Enix reboot targets aggressive multiplatform strategy

PS5 exclusives, no more.

Square Enix has detailed a three-year reboot plan that will “aggressively” target a multiplatform approach across PC, Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation.

As detailed in its latest financial earnings report, the three-year reboot has four main pillars: digital entertainment, diversified earnings, foundational stability, and a balance “between shareholder return and growth investment”.

Something that’s decidedly different from today’s Square Enix is that the three-year plan states the publisher will “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs… Especially, in regards to major franchise and AAA titles including catalog titles, it will build an environment where more customers can enjoy these titles.”

The publisher also said it will “devise a platforms strategy for… Smart Devices/PC Browser portfolio… that includes not only iOS and Android, but also the possibility of PC launches.”

Square Enix’s latest big hitter, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, is a PS5 exclusive title that’s reportedly underselling. In the wake of this financial news, VGC reports that Square Enix is also preparing for a series of layoffs across its American and European offices.

The site says the layoffs will take place over the course of June 2024.

What do you make of Square Enix’s new strategy and the possibility of that PS5 exclusives from the publisher will cease? Sound off in the comments area, below.
