Embracer may sell Gearbox to sort out its financial woes

Volition has recently been shuttered.

Embracer Group is reportedly considering the sale of Borderlands‘ Gearbox in order to sort rising financial problems, a report from Reuters states.

The potential sale aligns with a plan by Embracer to reduce its $903 million USD debt by the end of its financial year. It follows a failed $2 billion USD investment over two years by the Saudi government-funded Savvy Games Group.

This report follows the closure of Saints Row‘s Volition, an Embracer-owned studio, after the extremely lacklustre showing of the title. The closure was part of a restructuring plan that will include game cancellations and layoffs.

Embracer purchased Gearbox back in February 2021 in a deal that was worth up to $1.4 billion USD. Gearbox has a developing arm and a publishing arm; the latter is responsible for titles including Remnant 2 and Star Trek Online.
