Resident Evil Apple ports need online check-in before play

Hope you weren't planning to play on a plane...

Capcom’s Resident Evil Apple ports — Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7, and Resident Evil Village — now require an internet connection to open and play.

The description on updates for all three games now reads, “Due to changes to the startup process, an internet connection is now required when starting this app.”

Capcom hasn’t detailed why the change was necessary, but fans are already up in arms about it.

“Welp, they had to go and ruin one the best ports to iOS ever,” wrote one user. “The Resident Evil single player games now REQUIRE an internet connection.”

“Apple should be providing refunds for this,” wrote another. “Unfortunately there won’t be significant backlash because as per their own sales figures barely anyone’s buying these ports. Online-only singleplayer games that too on a portable platform is ridiculous.”

Reports have suggested that Capcom’s Resident Evil ports have not sold very well to date. This could be for a number of factors, including the type of iPhone or iPad actually needed to play any of the ports, or the length of time that’s passed between the titles’ original releases and their iOS counterparts. No matter the reason, the need for an online connection before playing is just another nail in the coffin.

Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 7, and Resident Evil Village are available on iOS to those with an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, and iPads with an M1 chipset. We wrote about our experience with Village on iPhone 15 here.
