Pokémon Go: Just how much data does it use?

Pokémon Go is definitely a battery drainer, but how taxing is it on your mobile data?

As Stevivor was in Sydney yesterday on business, we had an entire day of zero Wi-fi to find out. Using our iOS device, we averaged about 15MB of data on Pokémon Go per hour. That obviously changed a bit depending on how long we were inside the app; sometimes, it was for about 5-10 minutes, other hours… well, it was a full 60 minutes.

Despite the rather meager data requirements, America’s T-Mobile is starting a new promotion, called T-Mobile Tuesdays, that will provide customers the following:

  • Free, unlimited data on Pokémon Go, so it won’t touch your high-speed data—for a full year!
  • Free Lyft rides up to $15 to get to a new PokéStop or Gym.
  • Free Wendy’s Frosty to fuel up for your hunting trip.
  • 50% off select accessories – including portable power packs and chargers at T-Mobile stores – so you can keep on playing for hours.

While some of those freebies would be nice, you’re probably okay on your own. That said, it doesn’t hurt to use Wi-fi whenever possible, and depending on your carrier, might help with your GPS signal to boot.

Pokémon Go is now available on iOS and Android. It’s recently been made available in the UK.
