I’m proud to say that I got to fly up to Gold Coast and check out Topgolf after showing friends how it all worked inside PGA Tour 2K23. My friends benefitted as well; one — who’d barely ever held a golf club in her life — quickly learned she had a very consistent shot and quietly destroyed the rest of us as we uselessly tried belting the ball uncontrollably in an effort to gain points.
Before I get ahead of myself, let me say this: I previewed PGA Tour 2K23‘s TopGolf before the title was released, and found it ho-hum. I was very, very wrong about it.
After release, my husband and I kept going back into Topgolf mode and challenged one another in 1v1 battles. Needless to say, we grew quite fond of the virtual representation of the flashy, Vegas-style offering. That lead us to show it off to friends as we were planning a Gold Coast trip together, and the rest is history. Queensland’s Topgolf facility was just as flashy as what I’ve seen of the Vegas one — and better still, it also surprised us all, in-person, by offering a series of AR-style modes including one inspired by Rovio’s Angry Birds.
Speaking with HB Studios creative director Josh Muise and senior design lead Jordan Ault, I asked if there were any plans to bring over more than just Topgolf’s vanilla mode into PGA Tour 2K25 or beyond.
“Right now, we still are maintaining that kind of true-to-core Topgolf experience in the product,” Muise said, “[but] it’s not to say that something down the road couldn’t never come up.”
That said, never say never… especially if fan demand calls for it.
“We are always very open ears with all of our partners and it’s something that… we continue to again look at what the fans want and what the fans are asking for,” Muise said, adding that, “we’re fortunate to have [Topgolf] in the product.”
“Thank you for sharing that anecdote about our game convincing your friend to go and play golf,” added Ault. “We started out as we are making a video game for people who know what golf is and care about golf [in The Golf Club before the PGA Tour 2K series].
“It didn’t really play into ‘how do we get people to also who aren’t interested in this to become interested in this?’ That’s become more and more prevalent in our kind of cultural zeitgeist at the studio as time goes on,” Ault continued. “So the fact that somebody played our game and then that was a catalyst for them going and playing golf in real life, that’s the chef’s kiss moment that we are trying to get over and over again.”
Expect PGA Tour 2K25 on Windows PC via Steam, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PS5 from 28 February; two of its three editions include seven days of early access.
