Overwatch: Blizzard explains the -75% XP quitting penalty

Blizzard today explained the -75% XP quitting penalty inside Overwatch.

“If you leave too many games and your “games played” vs “games completed” percentage falls below our required threshold, you will receive a warning message (this percentage is calculated based on your 20 most recent games),” a Blizzard representative advised.

Players will be warned they’re about to receive the penalty; if they continue to leave matches, they’ll receive the -75% XP slug.

This is what classifies as leaving a game early:

  • If you leave a game after the “Assemble Your Team” phase is over and you enter the game’s spawn room
  • If you leave a game mid-match
  • If you leave a game as it ends, but before the Victory/Defeat notification
  • If you’re kicked from the game due to inactivity

The following does not classify as leaving a game early:

  • If you leave a game after the match ends and you see the Victory/Defeat notification
  • If you leave a game during the “Assemble Your Team” phase, provided you don’t get to the starting spawn room

It’s not that cut and dry sometimes; we kept getting kicked from games due to server instability last night, and suffered the -75% XP penalty as a result.

Overwatch is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
