Outriders trademarked by Square Enix in Europe

Outriders has been trademarked by Square Enix in Europe, prompting many to believe the term is connected to the unannounced title being worked on by Bulletstorm‘s People Can Fly.

The trademark, found on the EUIPO website, covers Nice Classifications 9 and 41; those classifications apply to entertainment mediums like video games, TV and films. Moreover, a second application covers gaming guides, clothes, toys and peripherals.

The news comes as Square Enix and People Can Fly announced a partnership to produce an as yet unannounced, AAA shooter. People Can Fly has opened two new studios in Newcastle, UK and Rzeszow, Poland to assist in development.

“Since People Can Fly became an independent studio again, our ambition has been to build a team of talented and experienced developers that can develop the best AAA games,” People Can Fly CEO, Sebastian Wojciechowski said in a statement.

“We decided in 2017 to open a new studio in Newcastle, the UK, to attract not only local talent, but also to attract the best developers within the UK. We want this team to grow to 20-30 developers within the next 12-18 months.”

The studio in Poland is comprised of many former CI Games developers.

“When CI Games decided to restructure its operations, we immediately decided to open a new studio in Rzeszów to allow those great developers to keep on working together as a team, and to contribute to the game we’re working on,” Wojciechowski continued. “Our intention is to give both new studios, in Newcastle and in Rzeszów, the opportunity to work on features or part of the game independently from the Warsaw team.”

For now, the connection between Outriders and People Can Fly is pure speculation. We’ll report back as more is known.
