Now Hawaii wants loot boxes to be considered as gambling

Chris Lee, a Representative from the State of Hawaii, is the latest to ask for a ban on in-game loot boxes.

Lee, much like the findings of the Belgium Gaming Commission, considers loot boxes to be a form of gambling and wants them thrown out accordingly.

“These kinds of lootboxes and microtransactions are explicitly designed to prey upon and exploit human psychology in the same way casino games are so designed,” Lee wrote (in a rather lengthy post) on Reddit. “This is especially true for young adults who child psychologists and other experts explain are particularly vulnerable. These exploitive mechanisms and the deceptive marketing promoting them have no place in games being marketed to minors, and perhaps no place in games at all.”

Lee also took a YouTube video with the same message.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was slammed for its game-changing loot boxes to the point where EA was forced to disable them prior to launch. Overwatch‘s loot boxes are a little less controversial, offering up cosmetic items to those who wish to use real-world money to obtain extra loot.
