Nintendo’s Fils-Aime on Switch backwards compatibility: “Stay tuned”

Speaking with Wired, Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime teased backwards compatibility on the Nintendo Switch.

“We recognise that some of our most passionate fans have spent quite a bit, whether it’s with Virtual Console on Wii or Wii U, and we recognise that consumers are rightly concerned about moving to Nintendo Switch without backward compatibility,” he said.

“My comment is: Stay tuned, we understand the concern, more information to come.”

Fils-Aime suggested that we’ll receive much more information about the console between now and its release, 3 March.

“There’s 40-some odd days between now and launch,” he affirmed. “There are more details to come. And at that point we’ll be able to define all of those various details of that online experience.”

It’s rumoured that the Switch will sport GameCube titles via Virtual Console for the first time. What remains to be seen is if past Virtual Console purchases will need to be purchased yet again for play on Nintendo’s new home-handheld hybrid. We’ll keep you posted.
