Nintendo Switch: Paid online multiplayer services will include voice, lobby chat and free NES, SNES games

Update: It’s been confirmed that the monthly NES or SNES title offered as part of subscription will only be accessible during that month only.

Original story: Nintendo today confirmed changes to its online multiplayer platform.

At the launch of the Nintendo Switch on 3 March, the new platform will be available for free. Beginning Autumn 2017, the service will require a subscription. Fees were not detailed by Nintendo at this time.

The service is said to be more in line with services like Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, offering online lobby and voice chat.

The Switch will also off local, wireless multiplayer between up to 8 different Switch consoles.

Moreover, those who subscribe to the online multiplayer services will be eligible to download a free NES or SNES game per month, with newly-added online play in each. The service appears to function much like Xbox’s Games with Gold or Sony’s PlayStation Plus subscriptions, just using retro games instead of current-gen titles.

We’ll have more on the service as it becomes available.
