Nintendo reports operating loss for third year running

Nintendo has published its financial year results, advising of a loss for the third year running.

For the fiscal year ending in March 2014, Nintendo reported an operating loss of $46.4 billion yen, or $489 million USD. The company moved 590,000 3DS units and 310,000 Wii U units from January 2014 to March 2014.

Neither platform managed to hit projected sales numbers, though Nintendo is satisfied with the 3DS’ performance. The Wii U? Not so much.

“The global sales of the “Wii U” hardware and software [for the fiscal year] reached only 2.72 million and 18.86 million units respectively,” Nintendo said. “The “Wii U” hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits owing mainly to its markdown in the United States and Europe, and unit sales of software, which has high profit margins, did not grow sufficiently.”

Nintendo plans to increase the availability of Nintendo DS games on the Wii U Virtual Console in an attempt to boost Wii U sales.
