NHL 16: Current-gen only, brings back EA Sports Hockey League and other missing features

EA Sports today confirmed that NHL 16 will be a current-gen only release.

Better yet, the release will include the features missing from NHL 15 when it hit current-gen consoles for the first time last year. Our review of NHL 15 said the game had “half a heart and zero soul” due to “too many cut-down or missing modes.”

Re-added to the mix is the EA Sports Hockey League (EASHL), a competitive online 6v6, team vs team mode. Moreover, modes like Online Team Play (OTP), added to NHL 15 as a post-launch patch, will be included in NHL 16 at launch.

Finally, the game’s Be A Pro mode will once again let a hockey player work through minor leagues before heading into the NHL, a feature that was omitted from last year’s release.

Improvements to skating and puck pickups are being worked into the release, as is a new training tool for newcomers to the game.

“We spent more time listening and working with them this year than ever before,” EA Sports GM Dean Richards said about the game’s development.

“Their most requested features and modes are in NHL 16 and include new experiences that make NHL bigger and better.”
