New Star Trek live action show a comedy set on a resort planet

Um, cool? That doesn't sound like Star Trek Legacy...

The next live action Star Trek show was announced by Paramount and is a comedy set on a resort planet from Lower Decks’ Tawny Newsome (pictured above). She and Justin Simien (Dear White People) are currently developing the series, according to Variety.

The show itself — currently unnamed — will be set in the 25th century (so the time of Star Trek Picard) and follow “Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.”

Not much else about the series is known as yet, including whether or not Newsome will feature as an actor on the show itself. We’ll keep you informed as we learn more.

Fan reaction has been mixed, with most optimistic about the show, but saddened that the highly requested Star Trek Legacy series has yet to be greenlit.

“I’ll keep an open mind but it is a shame there’s still no sign of a more traditional 25th Century show to follow Picard, Prodigy and even Lower Decks now,” wrote one fan. “This concept sounds fun but I’m doubtful it’s going to scratch that same itch.”

Star Trek Lower Decks fifth and final season will start to air in October; Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season 3 is coming, and a live action Star Trek Starfleet Academy (also featuring the talents of Newsome) is in production.
