New Buffy spin-off “nearing pilot order”; Sarah Michelle Gellar set to return

And Joss Whedon will have nothing to do with it.

A new Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off is “nearing a pilot order”, new reports from Variety and Deadline suggest. What’s more, the sequel to the 1999 original TV series will feature Sarah Michelle Gellar in a supporting role.

“Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series,” Variety reported.

Deadline adds that Poker Face‘s Nora and Lilla Zuckerman have written the spin-off’s pilot, which will be directed by the Oscar-winning Chloe Zhao (Nomadland).

Both outlets report that creator Joss Whedon will not be attached to the sequel. Since Buffy and its spin-off Angel went off air, Whedon has been accused of abusive behaviour by actors including Charisma Carpenter and Ray Fisher.

Speaking with Deadline, Gellar said she’s recently reconsidered reprising her role as Buffy Summers.

“It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” she said. “But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is available on a number of streaming platforms including Hulu, Disney+, Paramount+, and Stan.
