Netflix’s Basic plan has been removed from Canadian subscribers

Sit through ads... or pay more to avoid them.

Netflix’s Basic plan has been removed as an option available to Canadian subscribers, meaning Canucks either have to sit through ads with the streamer’s lowest cost option… or pay more to skip ads altogether.

As reported by the Winnipeg Free Press, the $9.99 CAD Basic plan will be phased out. That means Basic plan subscribers have the option of moving down to the $5.99 CAD option with ads, or $16.49 CAD for a service without ads.

Netflix has told the outlet that new subscribers will be unable to select the Basic plan when signing up, and then current subscribers will lose access to change to the tier “in the near future”. Those currently on the plan will be grandfathered into it unless they switch tiers or cancel their accounts.

We’ll let you know if this change of tact makes it over to Australia. In the meantime, what do you make of Netflix’s decision?
