Netflix with ads is $6.99 AUD per month in Australia

Worth it?

A new Netflix with ads tier will be priced $6.99 AUD per month here in Australia, the streaming service has today confirmed.

Available 4 November, Netflix with ads will be offered up in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the USA.

Those who opt into this new tier will be able to access to most of the same shows and films that are available on ad-free versions of the service, though streaming quality will be limited to 720p, technically still HD. Netflix didn’t advise which programs will be inaccessible, only that “a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions, which we’re working on.”

Moreover, users won’t be able to download shows on tablets or smartphones in order to watch them later on.

Netflix also promises an “average of 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour”, with ads that are “15 or 30 seconds in length”; ads will play “before and during shows and movies”. Ads will be offering advertisers “broad targeting capabilities by country and genre” and advertisers will be able to restrict ads from displaying alongside certain shows with sex, nudity or what have you.

Ad-free Netflix Australia plans range from $10.99 AUD to $22.99 AUD per month, depending on stream quality and the number of devices that can access the service at the same time.

Are you thinking about changing over to Netflix with ads? Why or why not?
