MultiVersus returns in May, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5

Surprise?

MultiVersus, Warner Bros’ Smash Bros-like character fighter, will return on 28 May, Player First Games has revealed. Moreover, the title has been rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5.

Speaking in an update video, which you can watch below, Player First CEO Tony Huynh said his studio “rebuilt the game from the ground up to support our new netcode,” adding that players should expect “pinpoint accuracy” and “consistent game performance, no matter what platform you’re playing on” as a result.

In addition to the game experience that people have already seen and enjoyed, MultiVersus will add a PvE mode that offers unique rewards, Huynh continued.

The update video gave us new glimpses at returning characters Batman, Black Adam, Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, Shaggy, and more, with Huynh also confirming that “some really exciting, brand-new personalities” would also be added to the roster. No new characters were confirmed today.

The MultiVersus open beta kicked off in July 2022; the game was then taken down in March of last year. At present, those who already have the game can play in offline mode until the 28 May relaunch; all purchases and progress made before 26 June 2023 will carry over into the main game, though offline progress will not.

MultiVersus heads (back) to Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, PS4, and PS5 on 28 May. We previewed the open beta here and have criticised its microtransations right here.
