Mortal Kombat fatalities begin as stick figures drawn by Ed Boon

Mortal Kombat fatalities are usually kicked off by a stick figure representation drawn by franchise co-creator Ed Boon, NetherRealm has recently confirmed.

Speaking with PolygonMortal Kombat 11 Art Director, Steve Beran, detailed how the developer usually starts off designing new fatalities. “Ed [Boon] always sets the bar with the first fatality. So many of the ideas he has, he’ll draw these little stick figures and he’ll set the bar early in the game.”

Beran admitted that Boon is aware of the new technologies being implemented in new versions of Mortal Kombat, and that the co-creator usually designs fatalities to take advantage of that.

“He knows what new tech we have for every new game and always sums it up in the first fatality […] and then we’re like, ‘Oh, that’s what we’re going — that’s where we’re going with this.’”

Beran admitted that while fatalities are looking gorier than ever, they’re clearly exaggerated and almost comical. What do you make of what you’ve seen so far?

Mortal Kombat 11 heads to Windows PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Switch on 23 April.
