Molyneux: Godus’ early access release was like “Call of Duty without the guns”

22Cans’ Head Peter Molyneux spoke to USGamer recently, likening Godus‘ early access release to “Call of Duty without guns.”

“We said, initially, our first release was 25 percent,” Molyneux said. “What we were trying to say by naming that is, yeah, 75 percent of the game is missing — it’s like giving you Call of Duty without guns. It is fundamentally going to be on the boring side.”

Godus has been available on Steam early access since September. The title has been updated numerous times since then.

That said, Molyneux acknowledged that very early access version of Godus was “boring”; players merely could sculpt and expand territory. According to Molyneux, there were no “big motivators” that drove gamers, nor was there competent AI in-game.

Molyneux has called the early access model a learning exercise.

“This is also part of the problem — when you do a game, a game can often be defined as exciting,” he said .”But I love the idea that I could play with this, or I could go off and I can do the exciting stuff and go off on voyages. It is a different experience.”
