Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst isn’t a prequel, it’s a reboot disguised as a “rebirth”

In our review of Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst today, we heavily criticised the game’s story. Without spoiling anything, I had great issue in the way that some plot threads and characters didn’t really flow from Catalyst, a game I assumed was a prequel as it’s basically Faith’s origin story, into 2008’s Mirror’s Edge.

Turns out, those elements don’t need to.

Our attention has been directed to an interview by Fenix Bazaar’s Gaetano Prestia, previously at MMGN, during last year’s E3. There, Senior Producer Sara Jansson explained it all.

We call it a ‘rebirth’,” Jansson said after being asked if the game was a prequel or sequel. “We wanted Faith to be a strong character, someone you care about. It’s a rebirth of Faith.”

There you have it. Some characters have traits — and even spellings of their name — that are different between the games, and it’s clear why: Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is a flat out reboot, no matter how you want to term it. If we could ask a follow up question, it’d be why DICE has been so cagey about saying so.

Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is available from 9 June on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4. We’re still not crazy about its story now knowing what we do.
