Microsoft turned down Alan Wake 2 because “they were looking for a new IP”

In an interview with GameInformer about the upcoming Quantum Break, Remedy Games’ Sam Lake has said that Microsoft turned down Alan Wake 2.

“When we went to pitch Alan Wake 2 to Microsoft,” be began, “they kind of had a counter-pitch. They were saying that they were looking for a new IP, and they were interested in something to do with interactive narrative.”

Quantum Break has an accompanying TV series that really began life due to Microsoft’s initial insistence to tie the Xbox One to television programming. Said direction has since been scrapped in the wake of Phil Spencer’s promotion to Xbox head.

Lake conceded that Remedy thought about tweaking Alan Wake 2 to fit that concept, but in the end, “it didn’t feel right.”

Lake also confirmed that Quantum Break was born from an episode of “Night Springs”, an in-game television show in Alan Wake. The episode was titled “Quantum Suicide”.
