Melbourne’s Torus Games to close, 8 staff laid off

Another studio has gone under.

The Melbourne-based Torus Games is in the process of closing up shop, with eight employees laid off as a result.

News on the closure came from Jackson Ryan on Twitter, who added, “Bill McIntosh, founder/owner, said that Torus had a number of projects in discussion over the past year — but no one keen to move forward in development.”

McIntosh told Ryan that Torus “will continue as a business for the time being” and he himself will remain in place to wind things down.

Torus was founded by McIntosh back in 1994 and has produced titles for a range of console generations beginning with the Game Boy. It was the lead on 2022’s Matchpoint Tennis Championships and recent 2018 titles including Hotel Transylvania 3, PAW Patrol On a Roll, Beast Quest, and Ben 10.

Torus also provided support on titles including LEGO 2K Drive and World War Z.

More than 8,000 layoffs have impacted the games industry in 2024 alone; in late 2023, Aussie studio League of Geeks confirmed it had laid off more than 50% of its workforce, pausing work on Jumplight Odyssey at the same time.

Our thoughts and best wishes to those impacted by the layoffs.
