Mario Kart Tour to remove lootbox mechanics

And it's happening later this month.

Mario Kart Tour will remove lootbox mechanics later this month, Nintendo has confirmed.

“Pipes you can fire by using rubies will be removed,” the company said in a tweet, also confirming that the functionality would be replaced by an in-game Spotlight Shop a couple weeks later in early October. Said shop will let players use the rubies currency to buy specific cosmetic items rather than gambling on what would be received.

According to Sensor Tower (via GamesIndustry), Nintendo has generated $293 million USD from Mario Kart Tour, one of its few mobile titles.

Mario Kart Tour is available now on iOS and Android devices. The title is free-to-play with optional in-game purchases.
