Keanu Reeves’ role in Cyberpunk 2077 explained

Developer CD Projekt Red — and Keanu himself — has fully detailed Keanu Reeves’ role within Cyberpunk 2077.

Reeves plays Johnny Silverhand, a “this [digitised] personality that is present in your head that you can see but nobody else can see in the world,” Quest Director, Mateus Tomashkevich, told IGN.

He has a huge role in the game, and he’s present most of the time. You create a relationship with this character a lot as you progress through the game. It’s a pretty significant character in the game’s storyline and the general experience.”

Detailing his own character to the BBC, Reeves said, “I’m kind of a guide, but I’m also… you know, you have to do something but Johnny wants to do something too. Am I your friend? Am I a foe? Am I really helping you? Am I not helping you? Are you in my way?”

Do you take the blue pill or the red pill?

“We had a lot of back and forth, and we decided to approach him, it was about a year ago,” CEO of CD Projekt Red, Marcin Iwiński, divulged during the E3 Coliseum. “There was a meeting arranged and we showed him the script, and he immediately got into the role and he really liked it. I think it’s really worth to mention that, maybe it’s a cameo? Maybe it’s just a short side quest kind of person? No. He’s the number two character in terms of lines and spoken text… [throughout the] entire game.

“I think we have something around 15-ish days of voice recording in the studio, so it’s huge. It’s huge,” Iwiński continued. “You will see a lot of Keanu, you will hear even more of Keanu in the game.”

Cyberpunk 2077 heads to Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4 in April 2020. Reeves’ full interview with the BBC is below.
