Bethesda’s The Evil Within will launch in Japan in a censored state, but those in the country can correct that with the purchase of the game’s “Gore Mode” DLC.
Famitsu (via Siliconera) made the report recently, saying ZeniMax Asia General Manager Tetsu Takahashi said an edited Japanese release means it will receive a lower CERO content rating. That, in turn, will bring the game to a wider audience.
“If we were to make it the same way as the foreign version, it’d be rated CERO Z [18 and up] and we felt that it’d be best to release it the way the creators make it,” Takahashi said, via translation. “However, that would limit the sales and advertising, so we’d lose the opportunity to reach out to as many customers possible.”
Two downloadable copies of The Evil Within will be available: the edited CERO D (17 and up) and regular CERO Z (18 and up). The Japanese retail release will be CERO D, with the option of restoring it to CERO Z with the “Gore Mode” DLC.
The Evil Within will be available from 21 October on Windows PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
