Indie handheld Playdate delayed into 2022

Another one hit by supply chain (and manufacturing) problems.

The indie handheld console Playdate has been delayed and will now release in 2022, creator Panic has recently confirmed.

Originally scheduled for a 2020 release date, the handheld was delayed into the end of 2021 before this new setback.

“We quickly became concerned that some of them weren’t giving us the battery life we expected,” Panic told those who’ve pre-ordered.

“Playdate’s battery is designed to last a very long time, and always be ready for you, even if not used for a while. But that was not the case: in fact, we found a number of units with batteries so drained, Playdate wouldn’t power on at all — and couldn’t be charged. That’s a battery worst-case scenario.”

Panic has returned the 5,000 units meant to go to those who’ve pre-ordered back to the manufacturer to have those fauly batteries replaced by a new supplier.

The Playdate isn’t the only new console being delayed — Valve recently confirmed that its Steam Deck would miss its 2021 launch and is now expected next year as well.
